This disc features first performances of Jacquet de la Guerre (her Suite in D minor, from Pièces de clavecin, book 2, 1707) on the piano, Antoine Mariotte’s Sonata in F-sharp minor (1905), Ravel’s Prélude (1913), and Didier Rotella’s Etude en blanc no. 2: “Elegie” (Hommage à Maurice Ravel), commissioned by the Fonds Galaxie-y. Also special is the meticulously researched program notes that brings context to the spectacular, yet little-known, music.
Review of the release concert at the Salle Cortot:
In the Jacquet de la Guerre: “sensitivity and sonic balance,” but above all in the Mariotte: With impressive mastery of the keyboard and with utmost authority, Andrew Zhou ushers us into a generously lyrical “Fantaisie” whose sonic range and expressive power are astounding under his steely fingers. The textures are more transparent and the colors almost Fauréan in the “Nocturne.” The pianist here emphasized the elegance and fluidity of the lines without neglecting the polyphonic richness with which this extremely demanding music is adorned.
